here's a great tool called cpulimit http://www.killprog.com/etce.html - you can limit how much cpu time exactly a windows xp process is given. Here's an example: starcraft runs quite smoothly even with 10% (probably even less) of my processor power, but if i don't limit it, it will use 100% and keep heating the processor needlessly!
